Burswood's Environmental Footprint
Burswood has placed a particular focus on reducing its environmental impact by pursuing meaningful activities in water conservation, waste reduction and energy efficiency. As part of this focus, Burswood has recently formed a dedicated Environmental Committee consisting of employees from all sectors of its business; an endorsed environmental management policy and environmental management system.
The policy outlines Burswood’s commitment to the environment through a number of energy reducing, water saving and waste management initiatives. For more information view our Environmental Policy.

Waste Management
Burswood encourages recycling around the Complex with custom-made recycling bins such as - Food Waste, General Waste, Co-mingled Recycling and cardboard and paper Recycling bins.
Recycling programmes are also currently in place for:
- cardboard
- paper
- cooking oil
- glass
- tins
- polystyrene
- plastic wrap
Through these initiatives, Burswood diverts over half of its usage of these materials from landfill.
Burswood has also identified an opportunity to significantly reduce its waste through the collection of food waste from its production kitchen to be used for composting. With a significant proportion of Burswood’s landfill waste comprising of organic waste (at times up to 70%) and over 9,000 staff meals alone being prepared each day in the production kitchen and food waste from our commercial kitchens, Burswood understands that a waste collection system could potentially divert hundreds of tonnes of food waste from landfill each year.
Water Conservation
Burswood has recently implemented a number of water saving initiatives:
Iron filters have been installed to remove high iron levels, preventing discolouration of the white building exteriors, complex wide. The bore project provides irrigation to over two hectares of parks and gardens saving approximately 15,000 kilolitres each year.
The retrofitted of the sprinklers to MP Rotators in three main areas of the complex; InterContinental Perth Burswood pool and spa gardens, Carvers Buffet Restaurant Gardens and Holiday Inn Perth Burswood gardens has shown a decrease in water wastage.
- The balcony gardens of InterContinental Perth Burswood have been fitted with sub-surface soaker hoses.
- More water tolerant plants have been introduced and Biowise and Burswood are working together to collect and remove organic green waste, process, and return it as mulch for all gardens around the complex.
- Landscape watering in many areas is hand-watered by hose rather then automatic reticulation to reduce water usage and public safety through wet paving areas.
- Installation of an automatic controlled urinal flushing system in the male toilets has reduced the water usage by 96% complex wide.
- Back of house showers and the hotel guest rooms have been fitted with water-saving shower heads, reducing the usage from 12 litres per minute to 8 and conserving approximately 262,800 litres of water annually.
- Platypus valves have been installed into the hand basins throughout the complex, reducing the usage to approximately from 9 litres per minute to 3.5. This initiative alone will save approximately 6,835,538 litres of water each year
Through these initiatives, Burswood has significantly reduced its water usage and in 2008, was awarded the Water-Wise Award in the Business and Government Agency (greater than 100,000 litres) category.
Energy Conservation
Burswood has an energy monitoring programme in place and has continued to introduce new energy saving initiatives throughout the Complex.
Recent energy conservation projects include:
- Time management of air conditioning plants.
- Lighting continually assessed and changed to more energy effective units – compact fluorescent lights, LED, sodium and voltage controlled units fitted.
- Auto controls to all external lighting
- Upgrade of controls to steam boilers and gas heating boiler to improve combustion process and minimise CO2 omissions.
- Central plant and equipment retrofitted and replaced with the latest technologies.
- Energy saving key tags in all hotel guest rooms to ensure automatic switch-off of power.
Burswood Entertainment Complex is also a proud supporter of Earth Hour.
